Lee Gavin and his traveling band of ne’er-do-well’s are back with a new caper to pull. Hired by a famous writer to steal an unpublished manuscript from its unknown author so he can claim it as his own, the band sees it as a simple job for easy money. Simple except that the key that unlocks the safe deposit box where the manuscript is kept is around the neck of Felix, the unknown author’s family pet cat. Solution, steal the cat, except that Felix, a thirty pound Maine Coon Cat doesn’t want to be stolen. From start to finish, nothing in the world of Lee Gavin ever goes according to plan.

"The Cat's in the Cradle" is a very funny book. If you ever read the comic crime novels of Donald Westlake, you might like this series of mishap-filled crime novels. This is the first of the Lee Garvin books I've read. It won't be the last.

I have always disliked reviews that give away plot points so I certainly won't discuss the plot. Suffice it to say that every time the plot twists itself into a pretzel, Mr. Lamanda deftly applies the mustard and zips into another direction altogether. Or maybe the cat jumps out a window. *smile*

I want to say a word or two about the characters. Even minor characters in this book have fizz, pop, and full-blown 3-D characterization. There are no throwaway characters here and none built of cardboard.

There are a few things I'd change. There are some misspelled words and some wrong words. "Straight" as in "You said you were going straight," is consistently spelled "strait," which is a perfectly good word, just not the right one. Will that bother most readers? Heck no. I'm an editor, so these things do bother me. Notice, however, that I still give the book four stars. This is not a deal-breaker. Not with so many good things on the other side of the scale.

What a lot of fun this book is. A genuine, old-fashioned (in the good way) comic romp.

Good
I have to admit, I snagged this book for free so my expectations weren't very high. When I caught myself laughing out loud at midnight, I knew I'd found a new favorite author.

Very few people have the ability to be truly funny these days and even fewer have the knack to do it in writing. Mr. Lamanda is an author who has it down perfectly. From his bumbling characters to the ridiculous situations in which they find themselves, the book progresses from silly to hilarious. It's hard to find yourself routing for the bad guys but these numbskulls are so clueless, they're endearing and that's just another part of the fun.

I'm thrilled that I happened upon the Lee Gavin series. It will be the perfect remedy for my next 16 hour plane trip.
I can't seem to get enough of Lee Gavin and his crew. It is almost like Abbott & Costello has gone the way of con men with a few other included characters. Gavin would be Abbott & Ian the bumbling Costello... In actions, not looks. Put them together with a few other of their neighborhood con men and you get laugh out loud funny in a suspense/adventure that seems to always go a bit awry. Great series, They could truly make a movie on these guys.
I was so afraid when I got this book that it would be a feeble attempt to imitate the Donald E. Westlake, Dortmunder series of books. What I got instead was a very inventive comic romp that actually had me laughing out loud in a few spots. If you like books featuring crooks with no luck, a wild plot with crazy twists and turns, then this is the book for you. It was highly entertaining, and I would certainly read the other books featuring Lee Gavin. And to think, I was determined not to like it before I read it, because I thought it was going to be a Donald E. Westlake ripoff. I'm glad I took the time to read it, and oh, Mr. Lamanda...nicely done.
Now if only someone would proof read. Several times he used the wrong sisters name as having spoken or spoken to and it can be downright confusing if you don’t know most of his books are full of words spelled wrong, names reversed etc. otherwise this series is a fun read with criminally like keystone cops
